Vice President JD Vance, a likely 2028 presidential contender from the Republican Party’s most nationalist, identitarian faction, wrote on X on Oct 17 that “The riots in France are a result of immigration and failed integration. Western liberals brought the 3rd world to France and other countries around the world under the banner of ‘diversity and compassion’ and this is what they get,” Breitbart Politics noted.
The riots, which broke out on Saturday, fused a ‘multicultural’ youth revolt with far-left activists protesting the cost of living. Clashes with police, mass looting, vandalization, and even arson attacks on government buildings took place. Fire destroyed the tower of the historic City Hall in the town of Limoges, built in 1883, some 250 miles south of Paris. The image of the burning building was shared by Vance on X.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez outlined the extent of the damage and the toll in injuries at a press conference on Sunday morning. According to him, more than 2,000 people had been detained over the unrest, while the number of injured police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters exceeded 600. Nuñez said the violence was driven by “extremely violent, radical far-left groups,” as reported by Newsweek. Roughly 400 people were reportedly detained across the country on Saturday alone.
Around 550,000 people participated in roughly 110 marches across the country, Newsweek reported citing French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Breitbart Politics estimated that 110,000 of them were in Paris and said over 1,200 people were arrested in total. These demonstrations were fueled by the high cost of living as well as the poor state of France’s schools. Protests which have gone on since September 28 saw many marchers bring back the “yellow vest” movement, which first appeared in 2018.
Large-scale protests have gripped France on Oct 17. As reported by the Associated Press, police used tear gas and water cannon at the Place de la République in Paris as cars, bicycles, other vehicles and trash bins burned. A newsstand had caught fire and several shops had been ransacked. India Today reported that the tourism office in Lyon was said to have been set on fire. In other parts of the country, intruders had reportedly entered town buildings in Marseille and Lille. Meanwhile, looters went on a spree in Bordeaux, smashing the shop fronts of Apple, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès stores. Vandals at the Marseille municipal headquarters reportedly knocked over a bust of Marianne, and spray painted an anarchist symbol.
French presidential politics is being reshaped by the wave of violence currently sweeping the country. According to Breitbart Politics, the current favorite to become Prime Minister if Marine Le Pen wins next year’s presidential election to succeed Emmanuel Macron is Jordan Bardella, who has vowed to “restore order” in France and has several different proposals for how to punish delinquent youth. Delinquents who are repeat offenders could have their family allowances suspended as of May 2027, Bardella proposed, and those who take part in riots would be forced to pay to fully reimburse the damages.
Newsweek reported that President Trump urged France to close its borders over the violent protests and, in a post on Truth Social, blamed immigrants “with hatred in their hearts.” U.S. midterm congressional elections are set for Nov 3 and, according to Breitbart Politics, Republicans are not expected to perform well in them. President Trump’s comments came as French President Macron was set to address the nation at 8 p.m. Sunday after the riots and violence, according to the Elysée Palace.
