Los Angeles — System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has issued a fiery rebuke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government following its unanimous cabinet decision to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915.

In a strongly worded statement, the Armenian-American musician and longtime genocide recognition activist accused Israel of cynically weaponizing Armenian historical trauma for current political advantage amid its ongoing conflicts.

“For many years, Israel’s government used AIPAC to lobby the US Congress to not recognize the Armenian genocide… due to their relationship with Turkey, their intelligence sharing with Turkey, et cetera,” Tankian said.

“Today, the Netanyahu cabinet decided to recognize the Armenian genocide of 1915 — a genocide that led Hitler thinking that he could do what he could do to the Jews in the 1930s and 1940s.“

The fact that this government is already committing genocide in Gaza and Lebanon decided to recognize the genocide of my grandparents is the worst fucking thing that they could have done to Armenians — by using our history, our genocide, our pain to their political advantage.”

Tankian, whose four grandparents survived the mass killings and deportations carried out by the Ottoman Empire that claimed an estimated 1.5 million Armenian lives, did not mince words in his conclusion: “F* you!”

Decades of Advocacy

Tankian has been a vocal campaigner for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide for years, using his platform with System of a Down and through solo work, public statements, and activism. He has frequently highlighted the personal impact the events had on his family and the broader Armenian diaspora.

Israel’s move to recognize the genocide marks a significant policy shift, driven in part by deteriorating relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. The decision still requires final approval by the Knesset. Critics, including Tankian, view the timing as opportunistic rather than principled, especially given accusations of Israeli arms support to Azerbaijan during recent conflicts involving Armenian populations.

Reactions and Context

The rock star’s blunt response quickly spread across social media, drawing both support from Armenian communities and criticism from those who see the recognition as a long-overdue moral step regardless of geopolitical context.

Tankian, who has also been outspoken on other human rights issues, has a history of blending his art with activism. His comments reflect deep skepticism toward governments that acknowledge past atrocities while allegedly perpetrating or enabling others.

As of now, neither the Israeli government nor Netanyahu’s office has publicly responded to Tankian’s statement. The Armenian Genocide remains a sensitive and politically charged topic globally, with Turkey continuing to reject the “genocide” label.

System of a Down, known for hits like “Chop Suey!” and “Toxicity,” has long incorporated themes of war, oppression, and justice into their music — a legacy that clearly continues to shape Tankian’s public voice.
